On "U Can’t Lurn Imaginashun" Vadim hits every note and every colour, not just the black and white ones. Like all Vadim projects, the songs here are fresh, funky and fun. There are reggae rubs that could sit next to Desmond Decker ; neo-soul and conscious-rap jams that recall Q Tip or Jill Scott ; experimental gems akin to the work of Flying Lotus or J Dilla. Mostly though it’s the sound of music being embraced and loved, and of a re-inspired life being lived. If ATCQ hadn’t already used Beats, Rhymes & Life as an album title, it would be equally suitable here…

The most deeply soulful record we’ve ever heard from Shawn Lee — a massive tribute to the soul sounds of the 60s and 70s, served up with help from a host of hip singers who include Darondo, Nicole Willis, Karime Kendra, and Fanny Franklin! Lee’s grooves are as funky as ever, but the instrumentation’s also a bit fuller too — touched with elements of 60s Motown, Memphis, and Muscle Shoals — produced perfectly, and delivered with a depth that we hardly would have expected from Shawn a few short years ago! The album’s a real revelation — one that grabs us with a similar surprise as Jazzanova’s excellent Of All The Things — which is another set that gets a classic soul sound as right as this one. Seminal early funk work from Roy Ayers! The record catches him at that perfect point when he was turning from a straight jazz player into a sinister force in 70s funk -- and the group on the session includes super-hip soul jazz giants like Charles Tolliver, Sonny Fortune, and Harry Whitaker, running through short hip soul tracks that were very different than the style of music they were laying out on albums of their own. Roy's on organ, piano, vibes, and vocals -- and he also handles the arrangements, with extra help on strings by William S Fischer, whose usual dark touches come across very well here. The album features some great soul covers -- like "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Day Dreaming" -- plus the original tracks "Cocoa Butter", "Rhythms of Your Mind", and "Red Black & Green".

Light Up the Night marked the end of an era for the Brothers Johnson -- it was the last of four albums that Quincy Jones produced for the Los Angeles siblings, and it was the last time a Brothers Johnson album was truly excellent instead of merely decent. When Jones was producing the Brothers Johnson's albums from 1976-1980, he gave them something their subsequent albums lacked -- consistency. Even though George and Lewis Johnson recorded some decent material after Light Up the Night, none of their post-Jones albums had the type of consistency that Jones gives this 1980 release. The album gets off to an impressive start with the major hit "Stomp!" (a definitive example of the smooth, sleek brand of funk that was termed sophisticated funk in the late '70s and early '80s), and the tracks that follow are equally memorable. From the sleek sophisti-funk of "You Make Me Wanna Wiggle," "This Had to Be" (which was co-written by Michael Jackson and employs him as a background vocalist), and the title song to the tender R&B/pop ballads "Treasure" and "All About the Heaven," Light Up the Night is without a dull moment. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
